Over 25 years of working on noise abatement technology
CALMA-TEC has dedicated significant time and resources to developing noise-abatement technologies for the road and rail sectors. In 1999, the first curved (outward-bent) wall was constructed, marking a paradigm shift in noise barrier design. Several iterations followed, culminating in solutions capable of withstanding even the extreme dynamic loads of high-speed trains. The breakthrough was achieved through the combination of open absorber technology and smart structural shaping. PIN is CALMA-TEC’s innovative top-mounted element that significantly enhances the performance of noise barriers, representing the company’s key contribution to reducing road and rail noise.

Acoustic engineers have long sought effective ways to make unwanted noise disappear. Outdoor noise abatement poses unique challenges, as sound waves disperse freely and any absorbing system must withstand wind and weather. CALMA-TEC pioneered the use of open absorber technology for road and railway applications — setting new benchmarks and exceeding all existing standards.

PIN A2 Laxenburg (AUSTRIA)
Pilot project in cooperation with the Austrian highway company ASFINAG comparing various top barrier elements. Results proof an increase of noise shielding between 3,5 and 4,8 dB(A) in 25, 50 and 75m behind the wall.
DB Rosenheim (GERMANY)
First application of PIN in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn. Several noise abatement technologies were tested in real life application. Noise reduction up to 4 dB(A) through PIN were confirmed
A54 Velp (NETHERLANDS)
In the Netherlands CALMA-TEC PIN was delivered in grey colour as requested by the clients. Present material developments will enable PIN in several colours although we have known that black is the most popular because it is almost invisible.
PIN rail application (ISRAEL)
PIN was tested on railway lines in Israel, demonstrating excellent performance under harsh climate conditions and high-speed train traffic. Measurements confirmed reliable noise reduction and mechanical stability.
M0 Budapest (HUNGARY)
PIN was implemented along the M0 ring road in Budapest to enhance existing barriers. The project demonstrated a noticeable improvement in noise reduction for residential areas located close to heavy traffic routes.
BuBe Railway (HUNGARY)
As part of this major international railway project, PIN was chosen for its durability and efficiency. The combination of acoustic performance and aesthetic integration contributed to a quieter and more pleasant rail corridor.
